Trulli Houses & Hilltop towns of the Itria Valley
Discover a must-see towns deep in the Itria Valley: Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Alberobello and his famous trulli houses
Martina Franca is a haven of whitewashed alleys, laundry drying in the breeze and cats napping in sun-drenched streets. You will also find outstanding Baroque Architecture, especially in the town’s beautiful and the most famous of all squares: Piazza Maria Immacolata. This piazza is a grand square framed by semi-circular buildings in the same elaborate style as Martina Franca’s churches.
Next visit Locorotondo, noted as one of Italy most beautiful towns “I borghi più belli d’Italia”. The town is splendidly positioned on the hillside with wonderful panoramic views across the Itria Valley. Meander the atmospheric alleyways bedecked with geraniums and citrus plants before enjoying a wonderful lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants. Be sure to try the excellent dry white wine made from local Verdeca grapes.
Lastly we discover Puglia’s famous trulli houses. These cone-shaped dwellings are unique to the region and in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Alberobello you will see a concentration of over 1,000 trulli houses. In the afternoon this famous site tends to be a little less crowded. Our expert guide and local superstar will bring the history of this picturesque town to life
